Spit. That’s right, we all saw you when you thought no one was watching. Spit. It’s part of the physiology and psychology of running.

I’ve been running for over 40 years, probably in excess of 110,000 miles. I’ve run on all kinds of teams from school to elite world class. I’ve run in races with over 50,000 participants. Suffice it to say I’ve done and witnessed a lot of spitting.

But when my gorgeous brown eyed petite 13 year old daughter decided to take up running – and spitting – I was shocked. Ann-Rachel spitting? Are you kidding? She spends hours preparing to leave the house and be seen. Not a hair out of place or a color on her outfit that wasn’t meticulously thought out. Good heavens, you just never know who you might see, you know!

So it was that when we took off on our first run (a 4 miler!) and I watched her turn her head slightly, pucker her cute face and spew spittle and say, “ya! That was a good one!” and then turn her prideful, smiling face toward me that I almost tripped and fell on the park road. I thought, “OK, maybe just once”, but even as I finished that thought there she went again, “Good one!” I heard.

Over the course of our pleasant run she must have made at least seven attempts at her “best one”. Me? Maybe twice, as I unconsciously began swallowing more often than I otherwise would do.

Ann-Rachel’s spitting wasn’t the gross kind that has its genesis deep in some drowning lungs of phlegm. But neither was her style at all self conscious. No, my daughter had become a runner, complete with all the natural attributes of being completely in sync with her body and its motion. She had arrived!

Now if I can just get her over her fear of flying to join me on Feb 23 in Las Vegas for the Tarkanian Shark Run…

On Feb. 23, 9:00 a.m., Las Vegas will play host to the Tarkanian Shark Attack 5k. “We want to provide a high-quality running event for people of every ability”, says Stephen Bolt, “for those just out for fun as well as for the serious runners going after their PRs.” Stephen Bolt should know about PRs having achieved world class status as the first American to run a mile in under 4-minutes, and a marathon in under 2:15:00

Stephen’s partner in the Bolt Series, CauseKeepers, is no less qualified to know what it takes to create a quality experience. Being the largest provider of services for non-profits in the US it only made sense that they would team up with a professional runner to create a running event series that could raise serious money for their charities. “The sport of running raised over $1.65 billion for worthy causes in 2010”, said CauseKeepers CEO Sam Hicks. “We are thrilled to be able to offer our non-profits this high quality, fun experience as a way to help them raise much needed money. I think you’ll see us grow from 20 events in 2012 to maybe 30 in 2013. We are excited!”

Pre-Registration Entry fee for the 5k is $35 and $40.00 on race day. There is also a 1 mile fun run, entry is only $20.

“I am really excited about what we are bringing to the running scene”, says Bolt. “Running has now really come of age. In the early days, only the real purists ran in road races. Today, tens of millions of Americans from age 5 to 95 enjoy all the fruits of the sport. And the Bolt Series is here to assure that they have a high quality experience”.

Those of us who grew our running roots in the shadow of arguably the most iconic American distance runner of all time continue to mourn his premature death and celebrate his unique confidence, competitiveness and love of running even today. It was a profoundly sad day in my young life when I learned of the tragic single car crash that took the life of “Pre” almost 40 years ago.

I had only one opportunity to run in the same race as Pre – the 1973 NCAA Cross Country Championship in Spokane, WA. Suffering from “freshmanitis”, I was not in the best of shape and my gut tells me that Pre didn’t even know I existed. That changed dramatically two years later, but in this race it was “Pre versus Nick Rose” of Great Britain via Western Kentucky. In the end, the Great Race ended with Pre ahead of “Nicky’ by a solid ten yards (a lifetime in a race of that stature!).

Recently, I have been going through the most traumatic challenge of my personal life and found myself almost unable to cope; certainly unable to “compete”. That is, until I thought of “Pre’. I started Googling his image, posters and quotes. Pre inspires on – even in death.

After considering many options, I finally decided to purchase a large poster of Pre crossing the finish line ahead of Rose in the Great Race – not so much for the image, but rather for the quote…

“The best pace is a suicide pace, and today is a great day to die!”

Yes, and yes! (metaphorically, of course)

Stephen Bolt

Franklin, TN – Bolt Series’ Executive Director Stephen Bolt announced today that he had reached agreement with the Muscular Dystrophy Association of North Alabama to partner on their two year old David McKannan Run For Research to be held on May 12 in Huntsville.

The Bolt Series is a new running event organizing company with 22 events slated for 2012 in AL, CA, CO, FL, IN, NC and TX. The Company is a partnership between Hall of Fame runner Stephen Bolt and CauseKeepers, the nation’s largest provider of services to non-profits.

“This is a truly exciting development in the growth of our event”, said North Alabama MDA Executive Director Brittany Jones. “We started this event two years ago and have watched it grow, but we think with the additional resources and celebrity that the Bolt Series brings we will see exponential growth. And that is good for our event, but more importantly, that is a blessing to the research for those people diagnosed with disorders that this funding can help. Last year, $1.6 billion was raised by charities like ours through running events like the David McKannan Run.”

Stephen Bolt’s response was more personal. “Ironically, David and I ran together through high school right here in Huntsville. I was the miler, David was the two-miler. We trained thousands of miles together and supported each other through some really tough, but exciting races. To reunite and partner again with Dave – especially for a cause so personal and important as ALS – is a blessing and and honor for me.”

With the fastest high school mile time in the nation, Bolt went on to attend the University of Alabama on a track scholarship while McKannon – the state’s high school two-mile champion – accepted the scholarship offer of rival Auburn. Nearly three years ago, David was diagnosed with ALS. But nothing would keep him from supporting his former teammate’s induction into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. “Having him there, knowing what he was facing, meant everything to me”, Stephen reflected.

The Bolt Series’ David McKannan Run for Research is a two day experience for runners of all abilities, beginning with a VIP reception (celebrities TBA), dinner and runner’s expo Friday evening May 11. Heading up the VIP package is former Crimson Tide QB Jeff Rutledge, who took Bama to a national championship in 1978 and more recently was the QB coach of the Super Bowl Arizona Cardinals. The USATF-certified 10k begins at 7am Saturday morning, followed by a 5k and then a 1 mile fun run for everybody – no matter what shape they’re in. The competitive race event then transitions into a post-race party with a picnic atmosphere including an open food line and live music.

“In Huntsville, we aim to raise awareness and resources for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and have fun doing it” explains Stephen Bolt, who encourages participants of all levels, from beginner to elite. “A Bolt Series event encouragers everyone to participate. It’s a celebration of positive life choices, physical fitness, running and family. We’re hoping to see thousands of folks coming together for a great cause celebrating with us.”

There is another dimension to this event that could catapult it into the entertainment stratosphere. Bolt Series Executive Director Stephen Bolt, no stranger to cameras and public appearances having been a featured guest on CNN, Bloomberg TV, regional FOX and his own show, is in conversation with producers about developing a running reality show around the Bolt Series events. The idea would be to use the David McKannan Run as the initial pilot program. “We are definitely trying to make this happen”, says Bolt. “Whether we are successful or not who knows? But we are definitely giving it our best shot”.
